learn to sing along

To be able to learn to sing harmony is a tough skill to master. Having a great voice doesn’t automatically mean that you will be able to harmonize well. Have you ever listened to music by IL Devo? These guys have vocal harmony down to an art. Anyone with a decent voice can sing along with the melody. The challenge comes from being able to successfully blend your voice with other singers. In order to learn to sing harmony, there are several techniques that can be implemented to improve your performance.
The first thing that you should do is to discover the vocal part you are best suited to. The male vocal parts are called Tenor and Bass. These are the higher and lower voice ranges. Alto or Soprano are the vocal parts for the women. The easiest way to determine which vocal part you are best suited to is by singing scales or performing a few vocal exercises. If you are a member of a church or school choir, your choir director should be able to help you do this.
A songs melody is supported by the use of harmony. Again, I’ll cite IL Devo as an example of this. In their music, 3 of the group members sing harmony while the other one sings the melody. They are performing supporting notes to give the song a much richer sound. Here is an fast technique to begin with. An easy way to learn to sing harmony is to play individual notes with a piano or keyboard. If you are part of a quartet you will use 4 notes and synchronize them. Each member will be responsible for one of the notes. When these four notes blend well together you have created harmony.
