Improving my singing?

OK well for my cello exam I have to sing (ah hate it). Anyway last year I only just passed the singing part. Basically what happens is that the examiner plays a short tune on the piano and I sing it back. Easy right? Only thing is I have an absolutely terrible voice and it doesn’t help that I’ll be extremely nervous and singing to a complete stranger. It’s not worth a lot of marks, obviously the actual cello pieces are worth more but I could seriously improve.
Any easy, free and practical tips?

thanks!
I do actually enjoy singing quite a lot, and I sing in public almost everyday. Just not seriously.

Argh. I had to sing for my Piano exam. It sucks, doesn’t it, even though I like singing… :D
Well, firstly, if you go in there, thinking that you’re terrible, then you’ll probably sound like it too. Try your best to be positive!
Also, I’m sure the examiner has heard worse, so don’t worry about what they think!
If you’ve got a keyboard or something, or even by using your cello, play scales, and listen really hard in your head! Even record some scales, and put them on your iPod and listen when you go to sleep! This will help get the notes in your head, and hopefully you’ll be able to distingwish them better! Also, with these scales, sing along. Just concentrate on hitting the notes, not how you sound doing it.
I know how you feel, so good luck, just practise getting those notes in your head and your throat!
GOOD LUCK! I’M SURE YOU’LL BE FINE!
